Fishing Club Newsletter

Welcome to the Lake for another summer of fun and great fishing. This fall, the fishing club stocked the lake with 500 8" to 10" and 100 14" to 16" hybrid striped bass. The season for Striped Bass is open all year long with the minimum size keeper being 16" and a daily limit of two. The Hybrid Striped Bass only lives about 6 years and in our lake gets to be as large as 9 LBS. If you catch a large one please take it to a weight station this way we can record its size. Also, feel free to keep it. They make great eating and are usually at the end of the life cycle.

The Annual Adult and Kids Fishing Contests are in full swing. The contest for this season will close on August 8, 2011. The 2012 contest will then begin on August 9, 2011. The weight stations are listed on the lake’s web site, and each station should have a fish flag at the wa-ter’s edge. The results for last year fishing contest are also listed on the LOCA web site.

The Annual Buddy Bass Contest will be held on Saturday, June 25 at 8 A.M. We will meet and sign in with the Lake Patrolman in the middle of the lake.

The Kids Sunny Contest will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2011 . Weigh in prizes will be awarded at 3 PM on the island.

2011 FISH STOCKING UPDATE

On November 15, 2010, Lake Owassa was stocked with the following:

500 Hybrid Striped Bass 8" to 10"
100 Hybrid Striped Bass 14" to 16"

Fishing Committee – Ray Earle

The fishing committee cannot thank you enough for your generous donations and enthusiastic support. Because of your generosity we were able to have one of the finest fishing and fun filled seasons on this lake ever.

We started the 2008 season in June with our annual Buddy Bass Contest. Vince LaPrete successfully defended his title with a total weight of 12 pounds 5 ounces with a 5 fish limit. Congratulations to Vince LaPrete and his 2008 fishing partner Tom Byleckie.

Look forward to seeing you next year.

For information about the contestants, their catch and a list of all the weights please visit our web site at: http://www.lakeowassa.org/ and click on the Fishing Club tab. And for pictures go to the Activities and Photos tab.

Our web site is the best source of information to see upcoming events and contest results.

On the July 4th weekend we held our Annual Sunny Contest for children age 15 and under. Samantha Benson took first place with 25 sunnies with a total weight of 9 pounds 8 ounces. For information about the contestants, their catch and a list weights please visit our web site at: http://www.lakeowassa.org/ and click on the Fishing Club tab. And for pictures go to the Activities and Photos tab.

Our year-long fishing contest comes to an end on August 10th. Trophies will be awarded at the LOCA general meeting which will be held at 10am on August 24th at the Branchville Fire House.

The 2008 - 2009 Fishing Contest starts on August 11th 2008. Please try to enter as many fish as possible because it is the best way we have to know the fish inventory in the lake.

The Fishing Committee purchased a seining net and has started to randomly seine. The purpose of this activity will be to compile a data base so that we can enhance our knowledge and appropriately stock the lake. For example, in early September we will be stocking the lake with 1,500 hybrid stripped bass approximately 6 to 8 inches in length. These fish do very well in this lake and the members are having a lot of fun catching them.

The first LOCA Fishing Seminar was scheduled to be held on the island on August 2nd. Unfortunately weather forced a cancellation and a rain date will be announced on the web site as soon as possible. Be sure to join us at this gathering on the island where some of the lake’s long-time fishermen will review tactics and your equipment.

Everyone who has enjoyed fishing the lake this year thanks you. Please continue to support the LOCA Fishing Club. Your donations have allowed us to sponsor all these wonderful programs and events. Good luck and good fishing!

FISH STOCKING
Fall is here and what a beautiful season we are having. Fall also brings us to our next fish stocking. This year we plan to stock a year class of Hybrid Stripers and some Small Mouth Bass, and in the spring we will stock Trout again.

FISHING CONTESTS
Our annual fishing contest ended on August 10, 2007. Congratulations to all of this year's winners. We had over 100 entries this year, and awarded fifty-six prizes. See list of winners under the Fishing Club tab. Remember we have two entry categories: age 1- 15 yrs & 16 years and older. Please bring your entries to any of the listed weigh-in stations.

Fishing club events to take place this summer include our 2nd annual Buddy Bass Contest on June 28, 2008,  and the Kid’s Sun Fish Contest on July 5, 2008. We will also have a Fishing Seminar for adults and kids to show anyone interested in how to get the BIG ONE!  If interested, please contact me at earleworth@yahoo.com.  Remember, our fishing contest runs all year until Aug. 8, 2008. The club also plans to build more fish habitats and install them in the spring.

FISH DISEASES (Very Important - Please Read)

Please be aware that some lakes in New York and New Jersey have to deal with two different types of fish disease. One is the VHS disease which will attack all species of fish. The other is the Large Mouth Bass Virus. We need everyone to help keep these diseases from coming into our lake. The easiest ways to spread the diseases are catching fish in one location and releasing them in another, using infected bait fish, and not cleaning your boat properly after use in another body of water. Please note instructions on proper cleaning and how to help stop the spread of these diseases under the Fishing Club tab

FISHING LICENSES

Remember your fishing license needs to be renewed by January 1, 2008; you will also need to buy a trout stamp with your license if you want to keep any trout we stock in the lake.

In closing I would like to take time to thank all our members and friends who gave so generously to the fishing club this year. Without your help we could not continue to make this lake the best fishing lake in the state.

Good Luck, and see you on the ICE.

Ray Earle.
